Monthly Report - August 2000

Well it looks like the good times had to end. London’s West End area are to impose a curfew. The West End Authorities are determined to stamp out the hooliganism and noise pollution that has risen considerable since last year. This follows complaints from residents from around the area that borders London most affluent areas such as Mayfair, Soho and Convent Garden. The Westminster Council stated that, "We are waging war against noise". We want to ensure local residents don’t suffer hangovers along with early morning revellers". Last year the "Iceni club" closed due to a number of complaints of residents who live around the area.

However, lucky for us some of London most important hangouts are not in those areas. These are the Fabric, Turnmills and the End which are based in the boroughs of Islington and Camden. These places are open minded when it comes to granting late night licenses for such events.

Well I said watch this space about if the stories/rumours about Tuff Jam were true or not; and they are! Tuffjam are no more. They have decided to go their own way with Karl and Matt working on different projects. Even Djing separately. Probably London first proper stars to come out of the UK Garage/UK Ground sound are no more. I have learned from Karl "Tuff enuff" Brown that he might be teaming up on a number of projects with Todd Edwards,(New Jersey, USA). Todd was seen in London’s Uptown Records, Soho, London, being mobbed. If he every gets to do a set in London, its going to be a roadblock just from the evidence that was witnessed in the famous London record store. It was packed with people wanting to get his autograph.

We may or may not see the Tuff/Jam team together again. But one thing is for certain they certainly did provide us with some classic moments, especially when DJ live. I still under the assumption that the best tune that they produces was on the Catch Label, London called "Catch a Feeling" (Tuffjam mix). Remember it? Wicked.

MikeyB of the Dreem Teem, Picture Copyright Camdem Palace, London Staying with another DJ team within the UK on the 2step garage Front. The UK known DJs "The Dreem Teem", made the national papers. But not for the right reasons. It became apparent that Mikey B of the team admitted that he had spent time behind bars for Drug dealing. He explains within the Sunday newspaper called the "The News of the World" (UK), that this was a hard lesson that he had learnt, and one that decided for him to put him on the straight and narrow. It seems to have worked because it the Dreem Teem show has become one of the BBC Radio 1 (UK) MOST popular specialist DJ’s shows on its network, as UK Garage mania sweeps the nation. The Dreem Teem also got the thumbs up within the streets of Leeds (England) as their float and set was greeted warmly during the Love parade event there. There’s no stopping the boys.

More stories from England. Club@vision the late night dance music show has been pulled from our screens. LTW has pulled the show from its programming schedule after claims and allegations that the show broke the ITC rules by charging various clubs to appear in their later Friday night spot on ITV (England). Clubs such as Mezzanine in Hull (England) and The Brunnel Rooms in Swindon (England) paid around £2,000.00 (English pounds) to appear on the program for a regular fee.
Tony Turbo, the Swindon promoter of the "Brunnel Rooms" explained in the newspaper called the Daily Mirror (UK) that, "These people were on a double earner, once from us, then again from the ITV.". The Independent Television Commission forbids payment of this nature for any television coverage on UK TV The LTW has launched an enquiry into the bribery claims themselves.

The Paradise Garage, Kings Street New York, USA, is often called the greatest nightclub ever built, and with it the greatest DJ to ever Dj Larry Levan??
Last month at the "Dazed and Confused" gallery within London, pictures of the night club, the party goers and Larry Levan was to be found gracing exhibition. Held until the 10th of June, 2000, it proved to be a great success. Mel Cheren, the owner of Westend records was found to be doing a book signing appearance .The book was called,"Keep On Dancin' (My Life and the Paradise Garage)" at Dance Tracks, New York, USA, on the 21st July, 2000 from between the hours of 6:00PM to 8:00PM.. Who went? Can any one let us know on that side of the pond? Parties have been even set-up on the great mans birthday in New York, USA. The man being Larry Levan of course. Hailed as the Jimi Hendrix of Modern Djing.

Ayia Napa, Cyprus, is has hit the big time. But cannot fail to notice the musical compilations albums adverts out there on UK T.V telling you about the island and UK Garage DJ’s remixing them.
From the Artful Dodger to Ramsey and Fen; from the Dreem Teem to Shanks and Big Foot. It seems like all the majors dj's want a piece of the action. What was considered a fad when the music was being formulated in 1997/1998, has now become the biggest earner in the many genders of Garage and House music ever.

Sincere by MJ ColeAnother legend as with regards to the Uk/2Step Garage angle has to be M.J.Cole (London ,England). The Album is out, and its selling. Boy is it selling. Its called "Sincere", its on Talking Loud Records (England) Well, what can I say. If you’ve got a copy then you don’t need me to say anything. Brilliant. It can be easily listen to at home or played in front of a up for it dance floor. 12 Tracks, some of them already classics will burn into your brain. Get this.

Chicago and Guidance records go hand in hand. There once was a time when New York was considered the center of Hiphop and Chicago the center of House. Things have changed, as we see a number of world cites creating these types of music’s with their own slant and favour.
Chicago Deep House is loved all over the world. Artists such as Glen Underground, Ron Trent and Larry Heard are considered gods to the scene. Guidance records is seen as one of the worlds best labels to hear this type of music. It has probably the biggest following in the Soulful House scene as we speak stretching right around the world from the New Zealand to Canada.
