Fine, so you've finished your GCSE's, opened the paper, cheered :-) or cried :-(, had the seriously big party and woke up 10 hours later not knowing where you are with a massive headache but..

What do you do next?

This feature is about what to do after your high school days are done...

First of all lets get one thing straight - you do not have to go on to 6th form, college or any sort of higher learning place unless you want to - its your future. If you have been offered a job doing something you really love, or an apprenticeship with a firm then take it! However continuing your education is very important if you want to go on to a job such as teaching, law, medicine etc.

The list below highlights some of the key points on what to do if you want to stay on in education, or if you want to go on to get a job:

I choose... Further Education:

  • Remember to apply early for the place you want most - have two or three other choices...just in case!!
  • Consult a careers database such as KUDOS - it can offer help on what subject to study if you are aiming at a specific subject.
  • Decide whether you want GNVQ or A-level - the difference is that GNVQ has tests along the way, whereas A-level has just one series of exams at the end (for advice on how to revise go here).
  • Have a back-up in case you don't get the grade you want.

I choose... A Job:

  • Look out for opportunities - a job starting as a lighting engineer in TV could turn into a producer.
  • Don't be afraid to ask people for a job/training most times if you shown interest you can go far - in any case all they can say is no.
  • Modern Apprenticeships are golden opportunites - they offer on the job training, allowing you to get paid to learn your trade!
