Vegetarianism
You may have heard of one of your mates going veggie; and with an estimated 12% of all people aged 11-17 (that's us) doing it it might be good to see what vegetarianism is all about.
Basically a veggie diet is not eating meat, poultry or fish; an alternative to this is becoming a vegan, which means cutting out dairy products as well.
In the UK there are almost 4 million vegetarians, including about 12% of young people. Health, religion or not being able to face eating what once used to be a nice fluffy lamb are the usual factors behind this decision.
Different types of vegetarianism

- Lactovegetarians include milk and milk products in their diet but do not eat meat, poultry, fish or eggs.
- Lacto-ovovegetarians eat milk, dairy products and eggs but no meat.
- Vegans only eat vegetables, vegetable oils and cereals, and consume no animal products whatsoever.
- Partial vegetarians exclude some groups of animal foods but not others, eg they may eat chicken or fish but no red meat.
