talking to employees- of a restaurant/pub
&WHO: Keiren and Charlotte
WHERE: They both work for Nick Irwin at the Waggon and Horses in Sudbury
Keiren is just 15 and has been working for Nick for 3 weeks
How did you get the job?
I got the job as a result of doing work experience, this was arranged by my school and it
lasted for 2 weeks. My jobs included washing up, shopping for food for the kitchen, cleaning
up around the pub and serving in the restaurant. When I finished Nick asked me if I wanted a
regular part time job and I said yes.
When do you work and what do you do on a normal day?
I work Saturday and sometimes Sunday, and I get £15 for a session. The session lasts from
about 9.30 to about 3.30. On a normal day, I start with the shopping. Today I went into
Sudbury and did a lot of shopping for Nick; stuff for the kitchens. Then I came back and
spent some time washing up and preparing food. Later on I will also be serving in the
restaurant if it gets busy.
Do you enjoy the job?
Working for Nick is alright. He expects you to get on and find work to do once you know the
ropes, but he is funny and quite cool really. I like the fact that I am always doing
something. I also like serving. Nick is also good at showing you things and you learn a lot
about the trade which I like.
What are your tip-tops for this kind of Job?
· Think for yourself and work out the best way to do things do things properly.
· Don't wear anything too snazzy if you are in the kitchen. I always wear an apron
as well because things are always getting spilled.
Charlotte is 16 and has been at the Waggon for a year and a half.
· She got the job because her mum works at the Waggon as well.
· She works as a waitress and also works in the kitchen on anything else that
needs doing.
· She works 2-4 hour sessions at the moment to cover holidays but during school
terms she cuts this down.
· Nick pays her £16 a session.
· During Luch she can serve between 30 and 50 lunches and on a busy day she is flat
out for a lot of the session.
Her Top-Tips:
· When busy, concentrate, watch everything.
· Use your common sense.
· Be fast and efficient.
· You need to keep your wits about you.
· When it's not busy look for something to do.
